Heavy Seas Alehouse

Partner Spotlight

Heavy Seas Alehouse originated in Baltimore and more recently opened a second location in Arlington. Keith Kirkland, General Manager, is excited about the growth potential in Rosslyn, with its combination of residential and commercial population and benefits of nearby transit options.

"We knew there was a niche for craft beer, but the first week was crazy," recalls Kirkland. While weekday business is brisk, he believes there's more opportunity for weekend business with beer dinners and events in the private dining area that seats up to 60 guests.

Heavy Seas offers a selection of six year-round drafts on tap, including their flagship brew Loose Cannon; a triple hopped IPA with notes of grapefruit, herbs and pine. Other drafts include the Small Craft Pilsner, Peg Leg Imperial Stout, Gold Ale, Powder Monkey Pale Ale and Cutlass Amber Lager. Seasonal drafts will rotate throughout the year along with a selection of other local craft beers. The current featured brews, Great'er Pumpkin and Loose Cannon T&C will be followed by Winter Storm and Black Cannon.

The chefs put as much effort into the food as the brewers do with the beer. "We wanted an upscale menu, not your average alehouse food. We wanted our own little twist on it." Two examples are a pretzel stuffed with blue crab and ancho mustard sauce and chicken wings with guava hot sauce dusted with ghost peppers. Chef de Cuisine Marc Kennedy is committed to developing a food culture that focuses on cooking from scratch, and featuring fresh and seasonal ingredients that are sourced locally whenever possible.

Proximity to a variety of transit options is a huge benefit, for both patrons and employees. Kirkland often commutes to work via the Metro and most of his staff either take Metro or bus to work.

Kirkland believes Arlington's Car-Free Diet initiative is very important to local business and the community. "We depend on people knowing where we're located," he said. "Customers will ask the hostess or staff about transit, and because they take transit themselves they are able to give people options."
