Momentum — The Next Generation of Metro: Arlington County’s Role in the Region’s Transit Future with Shyam Kannan, WMATA Director of Planning

WMATA has big plans for Metro. Its vision imagines a Metro rail loop, two new train stations in Arlington and a new tunnel from Rosslyn to Georgetown. However, aging infrastructure and an expected influx of 1.6 million people to the region present challenges. How can Metro stay ahead of the curve and accommodate growth? If Metro doesn’t keep up, will the region’s economic future be in jeopardy? And how do major investments in Arlington play pivotal roles in the region’s future? 2.0 CM - pending

About the speaker: Mr. Kannan directs WMATA’s strategic planning efforts and supervises long-range planning, sustainability and regional coordination. He has a particular interest in the economic benefits of transit, as well as coordinating closely with the business community. He is a member of the Region Forward Coalition of the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments and the Regionalism Council of the Urban Land Institute (DC). Mr. Kannan has a Master’s Degree in Public Policy and Urban Planning from Harvard University.
