Developed in the 1940s by Joseph Cherner, the Village at Shirlington began life as one of the largest shopping centers in the DC area complete with nearby rail service (Washington & Old Dominion line). That same line is now a nearly 45-mile multi-use trail that offers cyclists, runners and walkers access to the urban village. Fast forward 75 years and ironically, the closest set of rails is nearly four miles away, yet Shirlington is just as accessible by other modes of transportation. Shirlington Transit Center is the “Grand Central” of South Arlington served by both ART and Metro buses while shuffling 2,000+ commuters daily. Three nearby Capital Bikeshare stations offer a total of 40 bikes. And the walkability of this urban village makes it a gem for local neighbors who leave their car at home.

With more than two dozen eateries, there are plenty of options for refueling. But it doesn’t stop there. Catch a movie, check out a library book, take in a Tony award-winning show at Signature Theatre and much more. With 53 retail shops, 142 hotel rooms and nearly 600,000 sq. ft. of office space, there’s a lot to take in at this jewel of South Arlington.

Events are also a big draw to Shirlington. Oktoberfest, hosted by Capitol City Brewing, features 65+ breweries, Shirlala showcases local musical talent and the Shirley Lights Up the Village is a great holiday event that can be shared with the whole family.

This vibrant, walkable community is home to a diverse crowd of runners, dog owners, young professionals and more. At 30 acres, there is something for everyone at the Village at Shirlington.
